Wedding Planning Tips: Taking a Moment

It's Wedding Wednesday, which means we come bearing tips! You know we love to do that, right? Today we're in full wedding mode {well, when are we not?} plugging away on some fabulously fun weddings and thinking about a special project we're working on {we'll be revealing quite soon}; you know we love to do that too, right?

What are you up to this Wedding Wednesday? Whether you're a wedding artist or bride- or groom-to-be, seriously and thoughtfully planning a wedding day timeline makes a world of difference. A poorly planned wedding day can mean stress, missed opportunities for visiting with guests, and a cramped day that's moving too quickly and too chaotically.
With each of our couples we start from scratch to develop their wedding day timeline so that it ensures maximum joy and fun. One of the most commonly overlooked timeline pieces a couple doesn't consider is time for the happy newlyweds to just relax. It seems obvious, doesn't it? Well, when you've been in the thick of planning your wedding although it's your day, so many couples get swept up in the excitement of seeing their guests and enjoying the party.
Of course, we love a good party and want you to enjoy those moments, so we always build in padding. We have a pulse on how long it takes to move a crowd of 75, 150, 400, and so on, and are able to create timing by extending cocktail hour and adding in time for the happy couple when guests are transitioning.

Taking even fifteen to thirty minutes during the time of shuffling guests is perfect as you won't miss the celebration and get a moment to reflect and recharge.

What's most important to you and your wedding day timeline? Are you going to take a moment?

Blushing Bride: Accessories, Accessories

Oh, Monday morning is here. It always comes so quickly, doesn't it? Well today we're okay with it as we know our East Coast friends and readers have been on pins and needles all weekend. We're so happy you've all weathered the storm safely and hope you're all back to normal soon.

A piece of our wedding planning and design pie is helping coordinate, polish, and pull together the looks for our brides, grooms, and their wedding parties. When Aleah gets to the fun details of planning the wedding day look{s} with our brides, there are a few key elements that create that jaw-dropping unforgettable look.

Baubles: jewelry plays such a role in your wedding look so really think about whether you need a statement piece or if it will take away from your dress and décolletage. If your dress is adorned with heavy beading and lacy accents perhaps stick with more understated earrings and a cuff or sweet bracelet. Swap those out for funkier pieces for dancing and fun.

Shoes: we all love shoes...on your wedding day I say you have free reign to go all out and step down the aisle in something marvelous, something sparkly, something frilly, and something that's incredible. What better way to polish your look than with a cheery pair of shoes peeking out from under your dress? Just be sure to pack along a pair of comfier ballet flats for dancing the night away!

Heirlooms: not only does an heirloom piece do double duty as your something borrowed or something old, but it's such a sentimental way to honor a loved one. Something passed down from your great-grandmother or grandmother to your mom and then onto you represents generations of beauty and love. Carrying a locket, necklace, or even a brooch on your bouquet nods to them beautifully.

Your own tradition: more and more we're seeing our brides put their own spin on their look and start their own traditions they can pass onto their friends and their own children. A monogrammed handkerchief is a wonderful way to create your own timeless accent that you can lend to your best friend on her wedding day. Stitch it in your wedding colors or in blue for your something blue!

Blooms: your wedding bouquet will live forever in pictures! Working closely with your design team and florist to ensure it's breathtaking, dreamy, and a reflection of you is so important. You'll carry that bunch of blooms all day and it needs to compliment your dress but not overshadow it. Tie in your color palette but choose blooms with sweet textures and shades that will work with your frock. Tie off your bouquet with a satin ribbon that coordinates with your fabric and the tone of your dress and adorn with something sweet {like that heirloom brooch or some touches of bling}.

Fun: we love elements that make us smile. Unexpected shoe clips polished off our bride Megan's short and frock and added to her whimsical look. Can her shoes be any cuter?

The veil: I consider your veil the topping on your wedding day confection. Whether it's long and romantic, airy and fun, or a short birdcage veil that defines your look and frames your beautiful glowing face, make sure you love it! Why not go for a traditional look with a veil and transform your look post-ceremony with something like a girly British-inspired fascinator that screams chic and fun? Let loose and change up your look with a quick costume swap.

However you put together your wedding day look, you'll look radiant and stunning and happy and glowing! The accessories are just the icing on the cake!

What will {or did} your wedding day look consist of? Are you swapping out your I Do look for a more airy and fun look post-ceremony?

Destination Inspiration: Holland

We're just loving sharing bits of goodness based on real-life inspiration...it paints such a fun picture when you can mix and match elements that all come together to fill a blank canvas. One of our favorite inspirational places to travel is to Holland. There's something so magical about the canals, the windmills, the ages-old crooked buildings, and the history. Aleah's interpretation from Holland mixes and matched artisenal Delft-type patterns, bold impressionist colors, and darker elements from nature like tulips and branches. Wouldn't you love to be a guest at a bash that was reminiscent of old Holland?

Where are your favorite places to draw inspiration from when you travel?

Engaged! A Creative Ghost Town Shoot

Alas, it's Wednesday...where has this week gone? While we're trying to search for the hours that slipped away yesterday, we'll let you soak up this fun engagement shoot!

We know that whenever
Photography by Verdi sends something our way it's going to be utterly creative, unique, and so beautiful. Today's Arizona ghost town shoot fits that bill and then some!

From Mindi and Rich: Our couple Jennifer and Stefano won their engagement shoot at a benefit for Ear candy, which is a charity that donated musical instruments to children in need. We photographed them at Goldfield, a southwestern ghost town in Apache Jct. AZ They were just married in Florence Italy where Stefano has family.

What a fun concept! We just love the rustic elements and timeless air about this shoot, don't you?

Adventure Honeymoons with NewlyWish

We're so happy to welcome back registry expert and founder of NewlyWish, Amanda Allen to lend some fantastic honeymoon registry advice {and a special treat!}.

The perfect way to cap off your dream wedding is, without doubt, the honeymoon. Since many couples are choosing to include honeymoon activities in their registries, and are replacing the traditional destinations like the Caribbean and Europe with more far flung, adventure-filled ‘trips of a lifetime’ to exotic locales, I thought I’d tap our partners at Immersion Journeys, known for organizing affordable and exquisite honeymoons and wildlife safaris in Africa and South Asia, for a some advice on planning an ‘adventure’ honeymoon.

Balance is Key
Even if you’re looking to go on a safari, Immersion suggests designing a balanced trip that includes elements of culture, heritage, landscape and nature, woven amid all of the gastronomical delights, people and music to ensure that you experience everything that the destination has to offer.

Timing is, too.
The time of the year is also important. African safaris are traditionally in east or southern Africa, which is in the southern hemisphere and therefore their winters are our summers, while South Asia is in the northern hemisphere.

Avoid the ‘Drive-By’ Honeymoon
When taking a big trip, it’s tempting to try to pack as many activities into your stay as possible. But remember, relaxation and rejuvenation are important, too. Immersion suggests taking at least 8-10 days, with a couple of days for air travel. This allows you to get over your jet lag and really get immersed in the destination with a fresh mind. Also, make sure that you have some flexibility built in to your plans so that you can move around at your leisure. Part of my honeymoon was spent in Peru and we ended up cancelling a day’s planned activities to just wander around the local market and take advantage of a couples’ massage at the hotel.

Oops! We Max’d Out the Credit Card...
Honeymoons are often the last thing considered in the wedding budget. But don’t worry, your honeymoon doesn’t have to be all ultra-luxurious to have a good time. To get your honeymoon budget right, make sure you spend money in the right places. A nice 4-star hotel will generally offer all of the amenities of a 5-star; the room may be a wee bit smaller and the towels may have a slightly lower thread count but if you’re going to be spending most of your time outside wandering the city or checking out the local restaurants and markets, consider putting your money in a higher-end safari lodge for a complete bush experience with all the frills and amenities in the middle of nowhere!

For a really good safari experience in Africa, or a bespoke tour of the Rajasthan in India, for example, Immersion suggests budgeting around $3,500-$5,000 per person. This will get you 4- and 5-star hotel and lodge accommodations, most meals, daily excursions, game drives with professional guides and transportation, and a bit of pampering in the lodge ‘bush spa’ complete with massages and mud baths! And, with new hotels and lodges opening in Africa and India every few months, there is a plethora of price points available to choose from and many developing hotel chains offer goodies and value-adds such as complimentary spa treatments and room upgrades.

So remember, your honeymoon is your reward for the months spent putting together your Big Day and it’s your first trip as a married couple, so take some time in planning to capping off your celebration with a trip as special and memorable as every other part of your wedding.

As a special treat, couples can mention NewlyWish upon booking a honeymoon with Immersion Journeys and receive a $250 AmEx gift card as well as a free couples massage at their destination! Contact Immersion Journeys at info@immersionjourneys.com or 917.686.2620.

Inspired by: Real Life Elements

Monday has arrived! Are you ready for it? We hope you had a wonderful weekend and have an excellent week ahead! We managed some relaxation atop the Best of San Diego Magazine bash, client work and writing, and design brainstorming. On Friday we designed a table top for the Exquisite Weddings Magazine lounge and wanted to share some of our elements and design process with you.
When you start brainstorming your wedding or party vision, pulling elements from your home, a rental showroom floor, and your favorite store {Crate + Barrel, World Market, Pier One, and the like all have inexpensive elements you can buy one of to help develop your vision} is a great place to start. China patterns, candlesticks, stationery, and snippets of fabrics and ribbon all come together to paint a picture of a beautiful vision. Continue to add textiles like napkins and linens, silverware, and place cards to round out your vision.
Whether or not you actually use each elements, tinkering with blooms, elements like branches, moss, burlap, and fiddle ferns, and glass beaded chargers will do wonders to help you really vizualize and describe your vision to your artists and planning team.

Stay tuned for images of our table design soon! *Stationery by Brightly Designed

How do you get inspired? Have you ever played with a real life vision board? If so, please share your favorite elements!

Inspired by Life: Parisian Romance

Yesterday we were busy bees guest blogging on Postcards and Pretties and The Loveliest Day and today we wanted to share our dreamy Parisian Romance inspiration we shared with Melissa's readers. We're constantly inspired by architecture, nature, culture, textiles, and colors, and we love sharing this natural, real-life inspiration with our couples and clients. Taking an image of something we enjoy and pairing linens, a fresh and frilly dress, fanciful cocktail glasses, and sweet blooms - all things you can actually obtain - gives such fantastic real-time inspiration, don't you think?

This vision was inspired by this incredible ages-old building bordering the Jardin des Tuileries we enjoy strolling by. C'est très magnifique! Pair our vision with a glass or two of good bubbly and we think it's perfect!

Where do you draw inspiration from? What do you love about Paris?
We're off to the Best of San Diego Magazine bash and we're excited to sit back and enjoy the bash {and perhaps a glass or two of bubbly}! Have a marvelous weekend!
